To Evaluate Source Sorting Programs in Household Waste Collection Systems

Composition and quantity per person of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) were analyzed in six municipalities with different collection systems. Samples of residual waste were sorted, classified and weighed in 21 categories. Collection data of total waste flow, including sourcesorted recycling materials, in the same area was analyzed. Multivariate data analyses were applied. The main questions to be answered were: What are the effects of weight-based billing? What are the effects of curbside collection compared to drop-off systems? Which indicators are relevant to compare different MSW collection systems? There was a clear effect of the weight-based billing system with 50 % reduced amount of residual waste/capita compared to not weight-based billing with a similar collection system. Collected amounts of plastic, paper and metal packaging per citizen were doubled with curbside collection, compared to drop-off systems. To describe and compare quantity and composition of the waste flow, six indicators were selected and discussed.
